Working at Babcock | John Dunstan

As part of the Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) JP9101 program, Babcock will deliver a significant upgrade to the Defence High Frequency Communication System (DHFCS), helping the ADF and its allies communicate securely, almost anywhere in the world.

High Frequency (HF) communications provide a valuable failsafe in situations where defence forces don’t have access to local communications infrastructure or satellite communications.

Essentially, this technology uses the ionosphere to refract radio waves from the Earth’s surface. It can be effective over major distances and around physical terrains such as mountain ranges.

In the face of an increasingly complex modern threat environment, Babcock’s capability upgrade offers confidence that Australia’s forces will be ready to handle any threat ahead of them.

Contributing to this program is John Dunstan, a software engineer who joined Babcock after completing degrees in mathematical sciences and software engineering as part of Babcock’s graduate program.

He says his time with Babcock on the JP9101 program has been very rewarding, with plenty of opportunities to learn.

“Babcock offers a fantastic and supportive place to work, and the work is different every day. The company offers resources and incentives to guide their graduates and teach them in their first industry experience.”

“Given I’m just starting my career, as long as I’m learning, I’m happy,” says John.

Babcock is providing the next generation of Australia’s engineers with a rare opportunity to work on the JP9101 project that directly contributes to the country’s security.
